The Census Bureau counts every US employer firm and, in economic census years, groups them by total revenue. The latest count with that detail is for 2022. In manufacturing, wholesale trade and engineering services, 75,711 firms had revenue between $10M and $100M. They employed 4.1 million people and took in $2.1 trillion.

| $10M to $100M | Firms | Employees | Revenue | Avg. per firm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | 28,622 | 2,454,154 | $778B | $27.2M |
| Wholesale trade | 44,106 | 1,354,824 | $1,229B | $27.9M |
| Engineering services | 2,983 | 282,407 | $72B | $24.2M |
| Total | 75,711 | 4,091,385 | $2,080B | $27.5M |
In manufacturing, firms in this band are 12% of companies, employ 20% of the workforce and earn 11% of the revenue. In wholesale trade the figures are 16%, 22% and 11%. Engineering services is made up mostly of small firms, and there the band is 7% of companies but 23% of the revenue. The average firm in the band takes in about $27M in manufacturing, $28M in wholesale and $24M in engineering services.
Why we work in this band
A company of this size usually has a decade or more of order history, several product lines and a sales team, which is enough data to find revenue in. It is usually too small to employ an analyst or a revenue operations team to read that data. The largest firms have both, and the smallest have little history to read. Hyphae works with companies in this band for that reason.
Limits
Each firm is counted once, under its primary industry, so a manufacturer with a distribution business appears only as a manufacturer. Revenue is total receipts across all of a firm's establishments. The $10M to $100M band is the sum of the Census size classes from $10M to $99.9M.
